Memories Monday

Courtesy of Boston Public Library Photo Archives
This is Filene's and the date is 1954. My memories of going to Filene's at this time are of a visit to see
Santa. They had wonderful holiday decorations and amazing windows.  Everyone has heard of the wonderful Filene's basement- home to the most chaotic markdown scene anywhere. But this photo is more about walking into a real department store with one of my parents and enjoying the magic of Christmas.

  1. Martha reminded me of this in an email
"And all those scenes in the Christmas village with the moving puppets! That was wonder and magic…
    Love this Chris!!"
Yes, the puppets! I had completely forgotten the puppets. They were the best.

    1. Well now Martha THINKS the puppets were at Jordan Marsh. All I know is there aren't many places outside of Macy's and the New York stores doing that level of Christmas windows anymore.

  2. My fondest memories are going to Filene's basement with my mom and Nana Tapply.. they used to park me under a clothes rack and tell me to stay put while they shopped. Hours on end....

    1. Filene's basement was amazing. Couldn't believe what I was seeing the first time I went there.
